A gun is a god whose power is sought to be contained by its worshippers through ritual in both private and communal services. The presence of the gun god gives its acolytes feelings of secure happiness. Like all gods, its powers are used to destroy perceived enemies. "Gun is on our side and will show forth its power."
Gun god religion has been compared to snake handling. A lethal object is handled to show the worshipper's power. Often the worshipper is killed. The two religions differ, however, in that the snake is not a god nor used to destroy. Nor does the snake handler become the snake in the way that the gun god worshipper becomes the gun, implores the gun to become an extension of self, hence the term "fire arm."
