A myth is a story that explains our place in the Cosmos. Thus it is not just any story. A myth is a Mega Story.
The myth of eternal return (seasonal) competes with the myth of linear time (history) and the myth of fullness of time and its end (Messianic). These are all aspects of or stages of the consciousness of humans. The myth you hold is the consciousness you are.
Moving from stage to stage in the sequence depicted above can be viewed as an evolution of consciousness (which of course resides upon a value judgment). Perhaps we hold all these myths at once (seasonal, linear history, the eventual fullness of time) with each one coming forward as needed.
One form of these myths is found in the popular saying, "what goes around comes around," meaning it either bites you in the butt or gives you a full body hug with elevation to higher realms. It's up to us. This is where we are on the planet today.
(Great appreciation to Mircea Eliade's "The Myth of the Eternal Return" for setting me off on this line of thinking this morning.)
