Sharpening the Axe

"If a worker is hired to chop down trees and he spends most of the day sharpening his axe, he gets paid in full." (Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz referring to writings of Maimonides)

The triumvirate of the mouth, genitalia, and anus is not a prime route to God. The ecstasy of taste, of sexuality, of relieving waste can be used as prayer (yes, taking a dump can be an expression of gratitude and surrender) yet are often performed mechanically or at most with self-absorption. We bless those three areas, the biological triumvirate, and proceed further.

The heart is our major brain and is not separate from our head brain, though either may rebel and try to overrule the other. Head-heart interflow is essential to accurate perception and response.

Even more powerful is the crown of radiant light just above our physical head. This sphere of our being is in tune with the cosmos and all energetic living realms.

And let us not forget the feet. They keep us anchored, grounded for daily functioning on all planes of existence.

Through opening our awareness to these four realms, through claiming them, embodying them, we sharpen our axe. We are now ready for the day. This is a form of prayer.
